     A recent survey in the UK reveals that seven in ten Brits -and nearly half of youngsters- are fed up of  text slang.
    Millions of text messages are sent every day and Britons admit to using abbreviations and text slang, but they hate receiving it. Most people (71%) would prefer a properly written text message. 
    Britons have become the most prolific texters in Europe, according to this study, being the Londoners the biggest ones, with five per cent sending more than 20 a day
    Probably, when texting first appeared young people took it as a new way of conversing which could exclude people who weren’t in on the scene, and later it evolved from the shorthand used in Internet chatrooms due to the small number of characters allowed in a text message and the small keyboards on mobile phones. Nowadays, it is on its way to develop as a parallel language or… will it eventually fade away?
     Although for many voices texting is a kind of modern vandalism or mental laziness, the linguistics expert David Crystal thinks these fears are not justified. Indeed, in his excellent new study “txting: the gr8 db8“, Crystal presents a compelling argument in favour of texting as a force for, and signifier of, linguistic ability. In this interview David Crystal tells John Crace that txt spk is responsible for neither bad spelling nor moral decay.
